IMPORTANT PIEA UPDATE

PIEA members,

I know you haven't heard much from us since last spring. I was hoping that we would have some news for you regarding the status of the organization, but at this point we don't really have much to report.

You received a membership renewal from PMA today by e-mail. I thought they were mailing this and you would receive this listserve posting before you received the information from PMA. I got off a flight in San Diego to discover otherwise.

While PMA is no longer supporting any PIEA activities, they are offering a free trade show badge to the PMA@CES trade show in January if you renew your PMA membership by October 31. They have several other benefits of membership if you choose to renew, but we just wanted to make sure that you knew that your membership renewal was to PMA and not PIEA. None of these membership dues will go to PIEA.

We are waiting to hear back from the SPE board to see if they are interested in working with us to create a PIEA caucus within their organization. This might eventually lead to restarting the contest, but we don't have an answer to that question yet. And once we do hear back from SPE with the details of how this might work and the membership costs associated with this, it is the intent of Stan and myself to bring this to the PIEA board and members for your approval.

In the meantime we did want to let you know that SPE has offered to discount their memberships for this year to any PIEA member that wants to join their organization now. They will basically subtract the $35 PIEA membership from their normal rate, making their membership a $90 value. To receive this discount you will need to contact the SPE registrar by December 31 at 216-622-2733 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . This discount is available to all 2010-2011 PIEA members.

We will continue to use the PIEA Listserv and the PIEA Facebook page, along with the website (as long as we can) to keep you informed of what is happening.

Thanks for all the support.

Our new listserv is hosted by Google Groups.

TOP FAQs

Unsubscribing from a group (Google's official methods)

If you’d like to remove yourself from a Google Group, do any one of the following steps:

  • Reply to an email from the group with REMOVE ME as the subject of your message.

  • Send an email to PIEAtalk+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com. For example, if you want to leave the group PIEAtalk @ googlegroups.com, you could remove yourself by sending a blank email to PIEAtalk+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com.

  • Go to the Group’s homepage and remove yourself as a member. (Please note that you’ll need a Google Account to unsubscribe yourself from this group through this method. You can easily create a Google Account, but if you would prefer not to create an account, you should use one of the other unsubscribe methods.)

    1. Go to the group’s homepage. (Hint: If the group’s email address is PIEAtalk@googlegroups.com, then the URL for the group will be http://groups.google.com/group/PIEAtalk.)

    2. Click Edit my membership.

    3. At the bottom, click Unsubscribe.

Please note that if you unsubscribe from a group that only allows members to see group content, you might not be able to read that group's pages anymore. If you want to continue your membership in a group but don't want to receive group email, select the No Email option on the Edit My Membership page, then click "Save these settings".

Managing your PIEAtalk Google Group subscription

  1. If you don't have a free Google Account see the above FAQ entry to create one. Once you have a google account, Login to the PIEAtalk Google Group homepage http://groups.google.com/group/PIEAtalk with your google account to manage your account preferences (more details below.)

Your Participation in the Email Listserv

Please remember two things when sending mail to the listserv.

1. Please be courteous.

2. Please remember that your email is being sent to hundreds of members.

Using the Listserv

  • To send an email to the entire group, address the email to the appropriate group from this list:

    •    This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.Add the group email  to your email address book. (Login to pieapma.org to see full details Members Area > PIEAtalk Listserv)

  • Replying to an email will send your reply to the whole group not just the person who posted.

  • Make sure the subject of your email completely describes what is discussed in your email.  It is doubtful everyone will read every email posted, the subject may determine who reads and replies to your email.

  • If your email is a reply to someone else's post, leave the subject  as  re: . This will make it easier to follow a discussion thread.

  • If your institution blocks Google group emails, you will need to ask your IT department to allow messages from this group, or you will need to use another email for your participation such as a free Google or Yahoo email. Alternatively, you can follow and contribute the communication on the Google group web page.

Managing Listserv Emails

The primary complaint with email lists is often that when they are successful, the number of emails generated can make it difficult to manage.  Overall, PIEAtalk is a low volume listserv, with occasional spikes in usage--such as around contest or conference times. There are two approaches you can take to keep your participation painless.

Change Your Google Group Preferences

The Google service offers a great deal of flexibility in how often you receive group emails, or even allows you to get "no email" from the group. In this case you would read everything from a Web page.

  • After you have joined the group, you can visit the group page by clicking on one of the following links: http://groups.google.com/group/PIEAtalk

  • Click on Edit My Membership in the right hand column.

  • Answer the Question: How to you want to read this group?

    • No Email (read from web page)

    • Abridged Email (no more than one per day summarized)

    • Digest Email (up to 25 emails bundled)

    • Email (Each message by itself as it arrives) This is the default, and what we suggest!

You can change the preferences as often as you need.

Create a Mail Rule / Filter to File Emails as they arrive

If you receive all emails separately, you might want your group communications separated from your normal email communications so that they can be read at your convenience.  Almost all mail applications provide a means of setting up mail rules or filters to solve this problem. This will insure you can easily find group communications and also keep it from "mixing" with your normal email traffic.  The basic idea is to define criteria such that any email containing [PIEAtalk] in the from field should be moved or transferred to a folder dedicated for this purpose. Here are two links that describe steps required.  If you find steps for other email applications, please submit the URL in your comments, and the link will be added to these.

Additionally, filters can be created to do the same thng with online email such as gMail and Yahoo, etc.
